Six Years of Resistance
Alquds Editorial, Translated By Namir Shabibi
The U.S. occupation of Iraq completes its sixth year today without improvement in the security or stability promised by Iraq’s new leaders and their masters in Washington, leaving more than 25 million Iraqis without the bare minimum of either. The new American President, Barack Obama, during his swift and unannounced visit to Iraq, warned that the coming eighteen months will be difficult and full of violence and instability. This means more spilled blo od, death and displacement. Iraq was an independent country, anchored by strong scientific clout, with a well-respected strategic position in the region. This put it firmly in the general sights of U.S. crosshairs and made it, in particular, a target of Israel…

The Rotten Orchard
Nima Shirazi
…We are told that the barbaric destruction of Gaza had the support of 90% (if not 94%) of Israelis. Assuming this percentage excludes all Palestinian citizens of Israel, we’re only talking about 5 million or so bad apples. When the seeds of a society are cultivated on a steady diet of historical falsehoods, bogus founding mythologies, unabated colonization and rampant militarism, some bad apples, infested with hatred, racism, and convictions of divine right, ethnic supremacy, and perpetua l victimization, will surely grow. But with so many bad apples, it is clear: the entire orchard is rotten…

The Israeli Occupation Even Executes the Animals of Gaza (Report)
Palestinian Information Center
Everyone knows that the Zionist war on the Gaza Strip has entered a lull. The dust has settled, but other effects linger on. It’s no secret that more than 1500 persons were martyred and 5000 injured, in addition to the complete annihilation of thousands of homes by tons of explosives. All this is well known and has been extensively reported by those sections of the media that have revealed these crimes. However, one story that the media have not reported is what Zionist forces did to animals. They destroyed a number of zoos in the Gaza Strip, which are the second recreational outlet for its bereaved families and children after the first natural outlet, the beach…

Israeli Occupation Places Baby under House Arrest
H. Sabbagh / A. N. Idelbi
In an arbitrary act that is probably the first of its kind in human history, the Israeli occupation forces placed one-year-old baby Fahd Shuqeir under house arrest for two years simply for being born in Damascus. This act is one of the many similar actions that aim at oppressing the people of the occupied Syrian Golan’s villages and towns. The Israeli occupation used these tactics since the first day of Golan’s occupation in 1967 in an attempt to evict the people of these villages and seizes their lands, only to be faced with the resilience and resistance of the Syrian citizens of Golan…

Zionist Colonial Enterprise Superseded Judaism
By Hasan Afif El-Hasan
Jewish people are observing the Passover tradition of escaping slavery in Egypt and enjoying freedom. While they celebrate their ancient struggle against slavery and claim having Jewish moral superiority, they at the same time accept terrorizing, starving, strangulating, detaining and humiliating another people on a daily basis and occupying and colonizing their lands under false narratives. Last time I read the Ten Commandments that were given to Moses by God in the form of two stone tablets, according to Judaism, the sixth and eighth commandments prohibit murder and stealing. Murdering a human being is a capital sin according to God, but the Israelis murder Palestinians and steal their lands and properties every day…

Israeli Scholar Disputes Founding Myth
Morgan Strong
… In When and How Was the Jewish People Invented?, Dr. Sand, an expert on European history at the University of Tel Aviv, says the Diaspora was largely a myth – that the Jews were never exiled en masse from the Holy Land and that many European Jewish populations converted to the faith centuries later. Thus, Sand argues, many of today’s Israelis who emigrated from Europe after World War II have little or no genealogical connection to the land. According to Sand’s histo rical analysis, they are descendents of European converts, principally from the Kingdom of the Khazars in eastern Russia, who embraced Judaism in the Eighth Century, A.D. The descendants of the Khazars then were driven from their native lands by invasion and conquest and – through migration – created the Jewish populations of Eastern Europe, Sands writes. Similarly, he argues that the Jews of Spain came from the conversion of Berber tribes from northern Africa that later migrated into Europe….

America, Torture and Hypocrisy
Robert Parry
…The 41-page ICRC report, dated Feb.14, 2007, depicts scenes that could have come from the Middle Ages: naked prisoners forced to stand for long periods with their hands shackled over their heads or strapped to a bench while subjected to the drowning sensation of waterboarding or locked in tiny boxes as they scream and soil themselves. The scenes reek of sadism, as if President Bush took some perverse pleasure in inflicting pain and humiliation on these people, much like an an cient king getting satisfaction in a grotesque punishment against someone who dared to challenge his authority. There was a similar sense of sick joy in the way Bush reacted to the hanging of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein on Dec. 30, 2006….

U.S.: Early Friction with New Israeli Govt
Analysis by Jim Lobe*
If the past week was any indication, the U.S.-Israeli relationship, which could scarcely have been smoother during the eight-year presidency of George W. Bush, appears headed for choppy waters. Since taking office 10 days ago, the new government headed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has been slapped down – at least, rhetorically – by the two most senior members of the Barack Obama administration, including the president himself. Other steps taken by t he administration in the past week, particularly its vow to participate fully in multilateral talks with Iran on its nuclear programme “from now on”, have bolstered the notion that Washington under Obama no longer sees eye to eye with the Jewish State, and especially its new right-wing leadership…

“One Of…”
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza
Tuesday April 7 was World Health Day, an annual recognition of global health issues, sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). In honour of the day, Palestinians in Gaza hosted a short-documentary competition highlighting health issues Gazans face, with specific attention to medical care in Gaza during attacks or emergencies. The 2009 theme of the WHO is “Save lives: Making hospitals safe in emergencies”. This seems like hindsight, after Gaza endured Israel’s 3 week war in which Is raeli forces actively targeted over 70 hospitals and medical clinics, along with 10s of ambulances damaged or destroyed. 16 medics were killed while in the line of duty, and another 36 medical workers, including ambulance drivers, paramedics, doctors and volunteer medical workers were injured. Israeli forces targeted the medics under the pretext of security reasons, an excuse which has been repeatedly contradicted by the testimonies of medical and emergency workers, as well as patients themselves…

The Obama administration and torture
Tom Eley
On Thursday, Leon Panetta, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), issued an internal memo declaring the Obama administration’s opposition to the investigation of intelligence personnel who carried out torture under the Bush administration. The statement, announcing a blanket amnesty for those who have committed grave violations of international and human rights law, came on the heels of a leaked International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) report that detail ed, and defined as torture, the CIA’s horrifying “enhanced interrogation” methods…

But Gaza’s economic problems stem more from Israel’s brutal assault on the territory earlier in the year than from the global recession. Besides destroying more than 20,000 homes, the Israeli offensive left hundreds of factories and businesses in ruins, with devastating consequences…

U.S. shipped 989 munitions containers to Israel week before Gaza invasion
Australian Herald
In the dying days of the Bush administration, and a week before Israel launched an aerial bombing campaign, followed by a land invasion of the Gaza Strip, the U.S. military shipped 989 containers of munitions to Israel. Each container was 20-feet long with a total estimated net weight of 14,000 tonnes. The shipment reportedly reached Israel last month at Ashod, 40 kiometres north of Gaza. The huge arsenal of munitions will replenis h those expended in the Gaza War. According to Amnesty International in the UK, the shipment included white phosphorous…

Israel Furthers Cantonization of Palestinian Christians in Beit Sahour
Ivan Karakashian, Reuters
Residents of a Palestinian Christian housing project in the West Bank village of Beit Sahour say Israel is encircling their community with a security road to separate them from a nearby Jewish settlement. “With this situation they will put us in a cage, a zoo,” said William Sahouri, 42, a resident and member of the project’s housing committee. “We will not be able to expand.”..
