Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s Shame
Neve Gordon — The Guardian (Britain)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/mar/25/avigdor-lieberman-binyamin-netanyahu-israel

Thanks to Binyamin Netanyahu’s overweening ambition, Israel is to be saddled with a foreign minister who is a national disgrace / … Despite these egregious transgressions, newly-elected Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has no qualms about appointing Lieberman to represent Israel in the international arena. Netanyahu’s lust for power has led him to choose a man who actually poses a serious threat to Israel. Both Lieberman’s message and style are not only violent, but have clear proto-fascist elements; and, as Israeli commentators have already intimated, he is extremely dangerous.

The Absurdity of Spending US Tax Dollars on Israel
Paul J. Balles
http://informationclearinghouse.info/article22314.htm

… But Congress still continues to enthusiastically pour billions of our taxpayers’ dollars into the Israeli economy each year. What’s with that? Do our Congressional representatives hold dual citizenship with the United States and Israel or what? When are they going to stop voting pork for Israel and start voting bailout money for California? Are we Californians going to have to start firing Qassam rockets at Washington to get their attention or what?

Israeli Exports Hit by European Boycotts After Gaza Campaign
The Guardian (Britain)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/apr/03/israel-gaza-attacks-boycotts-food-industry

Israeli companies are feeling the impact of boycott moves in Europe, according to surveys, amid growing concern within the Israeli business sector over organised campaigns following the recent attack on Gaza. Last week, the Israel Manufacturers Association reported that 21 percent of 90 local exporters who were questioned had felt a drop in demand due to boycotts, mostly from the UK and Scandinavian countries. Last month, a report from the Israel Export Institute reported that ten percent of 400 polled exporters received order cancellation notices this year, because of Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Where Is Israel Headed?
John J. Mearsheimer
http://walt.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2009/03/26/please_tell_me_where_is_israel_headed

… The Obama administration will surely try to push Netanyahu to change his thinking about a two-state solution and work to give the Palestinians a real state of their own. The Israel lobby, however, will adamantly defend Israel’s right to do whatever it wants in the Occupied Territories and make it impossible for the president to put significant pressure on Israel. Netanyahu, like all Israeli leaders, understand this basic fact of life. He knows that he will just have to say a few nice words about the “peace process” and blame the whole thing on the Palestinians, who he believes are a bunch of terrorists anyway, and he will be pretty much free to do whatever he wants in Gaza and the West Bank.

Israel: Transforming International Law by Violating It
George Bisharat — San Francisco Chronicle
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/04/01/EDKP16PF6S.DTL

… Israel has a lengthy history of unpunished abuses of international law – among the most flagrant its decades-long colonization of the West Bank. To its credit, much of the world has refused to ratify Israel’s violations. Unfortunately, our government is an exception, having frequently provided diplomatic cover for Israel’s abuses. Our diplomats have vetoed 42 U.N. Security Council resolutions to shelter Israel from the consequences of its often illegal behavior. We must break that habit now, or see international law perverted in ways that can harm us all.

Obama’s Dilemma: Israel’s Threat to Strike Iran
Gareth Porter and Jim Lobe — Inter Press Service
http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=46441

A recent statement by the chief of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Gen. David Petraeus, that Israel may decide to attack Iranian nuclear sites has been followed by indications of a debate within the Barack Obama administration on whether Israel’s repeated threats to carry out such a strike should be used to gain leverage in future negotiations with Tehran. In the latest twist, Vice President Joseph Biden, who has been put in charge of the administration’s non-proliferation agenda, appeared to reject the idea.

Israel’s Hidden Shame of Its Early Years
The Guardian (Britain) — 2003
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/nov/04/israel1

For 54 years the fate of a young Bedouin girl who disappeared in the Negev desert was relegated to rumour and a single entry in the diary of David Ben-Gurion, the prime minister of the fledgling Israeli state. “It was decided and carried out: they washed her, cut her hair, raped her and killed her,” he wrote. After that the case became one of the state’s earliest secrets, and no more than hearsay passed between soldiers. Now the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz has used previously classified army documents to reveal the full story of what Mr Ben-Gurion called a “horrific atrocity”.
