Palestine’s Island Paradise, Now With a Word from its Creator
Strange maps

..”Maybe posting the full map would help to take it for what it is, i.e. an illustration of the West Bank’s ongoing fragmentation based on the (originally temporary) A/B/C zoning which came out of the Oslo process, still valid until now. To make things clear, areas ‘under water’ strictly reflect C zones, plus the East Jerusalem area, i.e. areas that have officially remained under full Israeli control and occupation following the Agreements. These i nclude all Israeli settlements and outposts as well as Palestinian populated areas.” Mr Boussac took advantage of the resulting archipelago effect “to use typical tourist maps codes (mainly icons) to sharpen the contrast between the fantasies raised by seemingly paradise-like islands and the Palestinian Territories grim reality.” The map does have a strong vacationy vibe to it – but whether that is because of the archipelago-shaped subject matter, or due to the cheerful colour scheme is a matter for debate…

Let The World See Israel’s True, Ugly Face
KHALED AMAYREH

There is no doubt that the new Israeli government, led by Benyamin Netanyahu, honestly reflects the collective mindset of the Israeli Jewish Zionist society. True, there are Israelis who are averse to racism and fascism, but these are unfortunately very few in numbers and their influence is almost negligible. Indeed, a fleeting glance at the composition of the new Israeli cabinet reveals an extremist coalition of war criminals, pathological liars, racist thugs , an d hateful religious maniacs who inhale and exhale hatred 24 hours per day…

Boycott, Surrender or War
By Jeremy Salt – Ankara

…There is no peace process. There never was. There is only a war process. The fictions of the Oslo process, Madrid, the Declaration of Principles, Wye River, the Hebron procotocol, have all been exposed. The Palestinians are infinitely worse off than before. Israel has been given numerous opportunities to make peace with the Arab world at the cost of retreating from the territories taken in 1967 and dealing seriously with the refugee issue. It has ignored them all. It n ow has a government that has no intention of withdrawing from the West Bank, from East Jerusalem or from the Golan Heights, a government that is speeding ahead with the expansion of settlements and the destruction of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem…

They Will Not Go Down: Celebrating Life and Land Day
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza

Less than two months have passed since the end of Israel’s grisly war on Gaza. Not a house has been re-built (there is no cement; Israel continues to ban its entry into Gaza), thousands are displaced or sheltering in an overcrowded relative’s house or renting a scarcely-available apartment. The aid has stockpiled on the other side of crossings into Gaza, many trucks being sent back or expired. And the pain of loss, let alone of seeing family membe rs -children, siblings, parents-burned by white phosphorous, being murdered or left to bleed to death is still unbearably fresh. Yet Palestinians are trying to move on, again, while dealing with a siege which has only tightened post-destruction of Gaza. Last week Palestinian youths held a concert in the burnt-out theatre in one of the al Quds hospital buildings, attacked and seriously damaged by Israel during its war on Gaza [more than 14 hospitals and medical centres were bombed and damaged by Israeli army, 2 clinics were destroyed, 44 other damaged, and 23 emergency workers and medics were killed]…

Maimed 10-year-old angry at Israel over cluster bombs
Mohammed Zaatari

From his hospital room in the Marjayoun Public Hospital, 10-year-old Mohammad Jamal Abdel- Aal says he will not forgive nor forget Israel for ripping off his limbs. Abdel-Aal’s left leg and right hand got amputated on Sunday after a cluster bomb, left over from the summer 2006 war with Israel, exploded while he was playing in one of the fields near his home in the southern town of Hilta. “I am not able to play anymore,” Abdel-Aal told The Daily Star o n Sunday. In the last 72 hours of the 34-day July-August war, Israel dropped around four million cluster bombs all across southern Lebanon. The main concentration of unexploded ordinance is found in villages and fields north of the Littani River…

Beyond Here Lies Nothing: Surging Further Into the Abyss
Chris Floyd

…But that is not what is happening. The long, hard, thankless effort that it would take to roll back the bloated global empire of bases and curtail the power of the oligarchy (for you can’t do one without the other) has not even begun. Obama is not trying to wrest the ship of state toward a new direction; he is deliberately and willingly continuing on the same disastrous, destructive course as before. Every day carries us further and further away from the shore, and makes any effort to reverse course that much harder — if indeed, it is still possible at all…

Alan Dershowitz: The Relentless Israeli Apologist
Russell Cole

On January 4th 2008, I happened to stumble across CNN’s Larry King, who was mediating a debate between a fairly moderate representative of the Arab American institute, James Zogby, and the relentless Israeli apologist, Alan Dershowitz. Needless to say, the 1400 or so Palestinians who had suffered the fate rhetorically sanitized under the rubric, ‘collateral damage,’ were not the victims of the Israelis, according to the logic of Dershowitz; rather, they were v ictims of Hamas. After all, Hamas members failed to extricate themselves from the densely populated territory, wherein Hamas provided social services, in order to line up in some type of military formation, so that they would become the unmistakable target for the Israelis. Therefore, the mounting civilian casualties were the fault of Hamas, because the organization neglected to cooperate with its adversaries…

Haneyya: The national dialog must end division and the one-party state
Palestinian Information Center

Palestinian premier Ismail Haneyya on Tuesday stressed that the national dialog must end division and the one-party state, create a true partnership and rebuild the PLO on a basis guaranteeing the involvement of different Palestinian spectra…He reiterated that the Hamas Movement accepts a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders in exchange for a long-term truce, but without recognizing the Israeli occupation, pointing out that as long as this is a common national goal, Hamas will not be an obstacle to achieve it….

One State for Palestine Conference – ‘Israel’s massacres are the price of maintaining a Jewish state’
Mondoweiss

The second day of the One State for Palestine/Israel: A Country for All Its Citizens? conference had a much more ominous tone than Day 1. It focused on the long road to building a one state solution – from the obstacles of the current moment to the challenges of building the movement to get us there. One of the reoccurring themes of the day was the incredible amount of violence that the speakers expect Israel t o use to maintain the status quo….Ali Abunimah said this best: Even to maintain the status quo, Israel would have to carry out escalating Gaza-style massacres on a regular basis in an attempt to terrorize and subdue the Palestinian population. In 2009, if you support Israel’s claim to be a Jewish state, you must also in practice support its massacres, because those are the price of maintaining it.

Israel ‘behind Sudan raids’
AFP

Israeli fighter-bombers were behind a mid-January air strike in the Sudanese desert against suspected Gaza-bound arms convoys, Time magazine reported citing two top Israeli security sources…”The Americans were notified that Israel was going to conduct an air operation in Sudan, but they were not involved,” a source told Time. “Dozens of aircraft” were deployed for the Israeli attack, the source said…The Islamist movement Hamas, which rules Gaza, has denied that the alleged weapons convo ys were destined for the group…

End the Occupation!
The Iraq Solidarity Campaign

Since the occupation of Iraq began in 2003, over one million Iraqi people have died as a result of the actions by the British and American governments. The occupation of Iraq has also resulted in the displacement of over four million Iraqi citizens, with millions more living in poverty and total destitution. The illegal invasion has meant that there are over five million Iraqi children who are now orphans as a result of the conflict, along with over four million women who h ave since been made widows. Each Iraqi person is living a life of uncertainty because of the false claims of weapons of mass destruction and the outrageous lie that Saddam Hussain was connected to the Al-Qaida attack on the Twin Towers…

Israeli troops fencing northern area of Azzun village; preventing access
Ma’an news

Israeli troops began fencing in the northern side of Azun village, located east of Qalqiliya Tuesday morning, effectively separating the village from their agricultural lands. In preparation for the operation Israeli troops closed the northern entrance to the village last month on the pretext that village youth were throwing stones at nearby settlers as they drove on the road passing through the area…

ISRAELI ARMY: NOT GUILTY AS CHARGED
Desertpeace

Barak welcomes IDF decision to end Gaza misconduct probe. Of course he does! Wouldn’t you if you were guilty of over a thousand charges of murder in the first degree? With the new incoming Israeli government….. and Barak appointed as Defense Minister yet again… with the investigations halted, we can be sure there will be more of the same in Gaza and other parts of Occupied Palestine in the very near future…
