Lexicon of Resistance
Gilad Atzmon
The following is an attempt to present my own personal dictionary of what seems to be the most charged terminology and concepts attached to the Palestinian solidarity and anti-war discourse.Palestine- a piece of land on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. For many years Palestine was the home of the Palestinian people: Muslims, Christians and Jews who lived in peace and harmony for hundred of years. In the late 19th century, in the light of emerging European nationalism, a few Jews had decided that Jews should not be left out. They then invented the notions of: “Jewish people”, “Jewish history” and “Jewish nationalism”. They decided to settle the majority of world Jewry in Palestine. Throughout the years the Jewish national project, i.e., Zionism, had become more and more sinister and ruthless. In 1949 70% of the indigenous Palestinian population had already been ethnically cleansed. Nowadays the majority of Palestinians are living behind barbed wire in a state of terror guarded by Israeli soldiers…

Iraqi Resistance and Arabic Summit in Doha
ANTIIMPERIALIST MEDIA
The Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMSI) wrote a letter to the Arabic Summit in Doha, asking them to recognize the will of the Iraqi people to end the Occupation and also not to ignore the brave Iraqi Resistance. Then, the “Jihad and Change Front” issued a letter to the Summit, too: “We ask you to meet your responsibilities to Iraq as the issue is still articulated in the protection of Arab national security … and remember that the Iraqi Resistance has resisted all the forces of Occupation for the past six years, and touched upon the seventh year, we have to stand alone. (…)” …

Senate Report to Reveal New Details of Bush Officials’ Role in Torture
Jason Leopold
While Congress has focused primarily on the country’s economic turmoil and the lavish bonuses paid to Wall Street executives, a Senate Armed Services Committee report currently in the process of being declassified will force lawmakers to shift gears. The Armed Services Committee will release–possibly as early as next week—its voluminous report on the treatment of alleged terrorist detainees held in U.S. custody and the brutal interrogati on techniques they were subjected to, according to Defense Department and intelligence sources who described the report as the most detailed account to date of the roles senior Bush administration and Defense Department officials played in implementing a policy of torture at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and other detention centers…

Al-Jazeera Video: Gazans doubt action from Arab summit
AlJazeeraEnglish
Israel’s war on Gaza has left 100,000 homeless, they have nowhere to go. Arab states have pledged millions of dollars to reconstruct Gaza, but the money has not come through. The people of Gaza have had enough of empty promises, they remain deeply skeptical as to whether the Arab summit will offer them anything other than rhetorical support. From Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Sherine Tadros reports on what residents want from this summit.

Israel whitewashes Gaza operations as expected
Eternal Hope
srael’s government did it again: The Israeli military on Monday concluded their internal investigation of alleged misconduct by soldiers in their invasion of the Gaza Strip in January, finding that there was no misconduct by soldiers. This report comes despite thousands of eyewitness testimonies attesting to the misconduct, and video and photographic evidence documenting the crimes. As expected, they whitewashed the investigation of whether their soldiers acted properly during the recent Gaza offensive. This is hardly surprising, given that they have routinely whitewashed other such incidents, including the killing of Rachel Corrie…

The International Conference against Racism: Why is Israeli Running Away?
Michael Warschawski, Alternative Information Center (AIC)
In May 2009, the second UN Conference on Racism will be held in Geneva. Like most other UN conferences, there will be a conference of NGOs parallel to that of the states. Israel has decided to boycott the conference and convinced the United States, Canada and several other countries to do the same. One can easily understand the Israeli/US reluctance to attend the NGO event: global civil socie ty is profoundly anti-racist and has no difficulty identifying the racist laws and institutionalized mechanisms of the Israeli state. This is especially true in two fields: land and planning, and residency rights. Like in the previous 2001 NGO conference, held in Durban, South Africa, Israeli racism will be one of the main topics of discussion, together with other states that support widespread discrimination…

Palestinians remember Land Day
Jonathan Cook
Palestinians across the Middle East were due to commemorate Land Day today, marking the anniversary of clashes in 1976 in which six unarmed Palestinians were shot dead by the Israeli army as it tried to break up a general strike. Although Land Day is one of the most important anniversaries in the Palestinian calendar, sometimes referred to as the Palestinians’ national day, the historical event it marks is little spoken of and rarely studied…

Welcome to Vietnam, Mr. President
Ray McGovern
I was wrong. I had been saying that it would be naïve to take too seriously presidential candidate Barack Obama’s rhetoric regarding the need to escalate the war in Afghanistan. I kept thinking to myself that when he got briefed on the history of Afghanistan and the oft-proven ability of Afghan “militants” to drive out foreign invaders — from Alexander the Great, to the Persians, the Mongolians, Indians, British, Russians — he would be sure to understand why they call mountai nous Afghanistan the “graveyard of empires.”…
