The False Darfur ‘Genocide’ Numbers
Moon of Alabama
Headlined In Defense of Genocide the neoconned WaPo editors condemn the Arab league for hosting Sudan’s President Bashir while at the same time accusing Israel of war-crimes. The polemic includes this sentence T]he United Nations has reported more than 300,000 civilian deaths in Darfur as a result of the genocidal campaign sponsored by Mr. Bashir. There are three false claims in this one sentence. As these false claims are often repeated from the far right to the interventionist left, let me try to dispel them once and for all.< 1. The number of 300,000 is false. 2. The UN did not ‘report’ that number. 3. There was no genocide in Darfur. The 300,000 number is simply taken from hot air…

Gaza Aid Prevented by U.S.
By Pål Hellesnes, Translated By Lars Erik Schou
The United States (U.S.) Patriot Act is preventing Save The Children Norway from rebuilding schools in Gaza. The organization is in despair. “We are allowed to distribute emergency rations, such as food and water, but systematic relief efforts and rebuilding is blocked”, according to Bjørn Lindgren, Save The Children’s regional director for Europe and the Middle East, in a Klassekampen interview. “It is a terrible policy that keeps us from helping children.”..

Iraqi Shoes Revisited: A Pair of Narratives
Ramzy Baroud
It’s remarkable how some in the media can cleverly manipulate a story by avoiding its essence and focusing on marginal details. The chucking of a pair of shoes at former President George W. Bush by an Iraqi journalist, Muntazer al-Zaidi during a Baghdad press conference, on December 14, 2008 is a case in point. Most Arab and Muslim media – and other media around the world, save mainstream western media – framed al-Zaidi’s deed within its proper context, that of a ho rrific, genocidal war, bloody and humiliating occupation and the colonial hubris of a superpower that gave itself the right and ‘moral’ justification to devastate a sovereign nation for the sake of oil, Israel and the desire for sheer hegemony…

Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territories: As US arms shipment reaches Israel, President Obama urged to halt further exports
Amnesty International (AI)
The new delivery to Israel of a massive consignment of US munitions, revealed by Amnesty International today, throws into question whether President Obama will act to prevent the US fuelling further Israeli attacks against civilians that may amount to war crimes, as were perpetrated in Gaza. According to new information received by Amnesty International, the Wehr Elbe, a Ger man cargo ship which had been chartered and controlled by US Military Sealift Command, docked and unloaded its cargo of reportedly over 300 containers at the Israeli port of Ashdod, just 40 km north of Gaza by road. The German ship left the USA for Israel on 20 December, one week before the start of Israeli attacks on Gaza, carrying 989 containers of munitions, each of them 20 feet long with a total estimated net weight of 14,000 tons…

Gaza Aftermath (6) “I know every inch of this land…”
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
As farmer Jamal al-Bassyuni plucked a stalk of ripening wheat, a posse of young men danced in his field. The dancers were flanked by a lively crowd, many of them women wearing the traditional Palestinian embroidered thob dress. Despite the nearby rubble of destroyed houses, and tracts of land laid to waste by bulldozers and tanks, the mood was defiantly sunny. Local farmers and their supporters were celebrating Palestinian La nd Day. Land Day was launched in 1976, as a commemoration of the deaths of six Palestinian citizens of northern Israel killed by the Israeli military as they demonstrated against expropriation of their land. It has become an important symbolic day of action across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, highlighting the plight faced by farmers like Jamal Bassyuni and his family, who live in Izbat Beit Hanoun on the northern edge of the Gaza Strip…

Lieberman: Israel Not Bound by Annapolis Commitments
Netanyahu Govt to Distance Itself From US-Sponsored Peace Talks
Jason Ditz
Already off to a provocative start in his first major statement since assuming office, Israel’s controversial Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman declared Israel to no longer be bound by the peace commitments made at the 2007 Annapolis Conference. The declaration underscored the policy of the new government, which was later confirmed by other sources close to Prime Minister Benjamin Net anyahu – the Israeli government intends to distance itself from the US-sponsored peace initiatives and the talks regarding Palestinian statehood are all but dead…
