In Iraq People Die Every Day
Steven D, Daily Kos
I know Iran is the total and complete focus of every media person on the planet right now, but in all honesty, I see stories like this one about the ongoing slaughter in Iraq all the time and I wonder where all the outrage and concern over this cornucopia of death and misery went? Why isn’t this story getting as much media attention as the death of Neda?…Maybe because they are so ubiquitous no one here in America cares anymore, or certainly no one who reports the news on the TeeVee. But if this was happening in Iran there would be front page headlines screaming about the violence and the usual suspects questioning President Obama’s failure to do something about it. I guess everyone in the news biz has “moved on” but for the Iraqi people Bush’s Folly continues to be the gift that keeps killing them…

Obama’s Undeclared War Against Pakistan Continues, Despite His Attempt to Downplay It
Jeremy Scahill
Three days after his inauguration, on January 23, 2009, President Barack Obama ordered U.S. predator drones to attack sites inside of Pakistan, reportedly killing 15 people. It was the first documented attack ordered by the new U.S. Commander in Chief inside of Pakistan. Since that first Obama-authorized attack, the U.S. has regularly bombed Pakistan, killing scores of civilians. The New York Times reported that the attack s were clear evidence Obama “is continuing, and in some cases extending, Bush administration policy.” In the first 99 days of 2009, more than 150 people were reportedly killed in these drone attacks. The most recent documented attack was reportedly last Thursday in Waziristan. Since 2006, the U.S. drone strikes have killed 687 people (as of April). That amounts to about 38 deaths a month just from drone attacks.

A velvet revolution in Iran?
Louis Proyect: The Unrepentant Marxist
The post-election crisis in Iran has prompted individuals and groups on the left to reduce it to an imperialist plot to foment a “color” or “velvet” revolution…As might be expected given its Manichean brand of Marxism that divides the world between the “imperialist” and “anti-imperialist” camps, the Workers World Party stood firmly behind Ahmadinejad. After denying that fraud took place, they made the elections sound like a referendum on the world revol ution…

When Will We Reconcile with Ourselves?
By Joharah Baker – Jerusalem
Unfortunately, far too many articles have been written about this subject. Every time pen hits paper (or finger hits keyboard), a wave of remorse and unease surely washes over any Palestinian writer who undertakes this task. “Palestinian reconciliation” should not even be a phrase in our lexicon much less a goal to which we aspire and have yet to reach. There is no need to rehash all of the circumstances which led to the damaging split that has divided th e Palestinians for over two years. To make a long and terrible story short, there are now two Palestinian ruling authorities – one in the West Bank under President Mahmoud Abbas and his leading Fateh party, and another in the Gaza Strip, under Hamas. Since 2007 when Hamas wrestled authority from Fateh on the premise that they were the legitimate victors of the elections, there has been effort upon effort to mend the tear that has society split down the middle. What is so disconcerting is the fact that the more time passes by, the more polarized the two sides get…

Throw Shoes, Not Invitations (plus video FLOWERS FOR ABEER)
Saja (“Arab with Camera”)
Bill Clinton, ADC (American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee)’s most zionist invitee with the most Arab blood on his hands, attracts the highest number of attendees at its convention. The NAACP invites the Ku Klux Klan’s president to its convention. The former sentence is true, the latter might as well be. I’ve seen “my people” celebrate the occupation of Baghdad. So by now I should be used to seeing perfectly intelligent Arabs prost rating themselves to those who annihilate their brethren. But I wish it were easy to just write them off and desensitize one’s outrage towards their self-defeating betrayals of their homelands. If this represents what it means to be an Arab-American, I declare my independence of Arab-America. If these people embody today’s Arabhood, I’d gladly choose the companionship of ghosts floating in the cemeteries of Jenin, Gaza and Falluja over that of my fellow Arab-Americans here in the US.,..

Death squads return to Basra
Nizar Latif and Phil Sands
Tired of life as an impoverished refugee in Syria, Abu Tariq returned to his home in Basra in the summer of 2006, prepared to wait out the rising violence and unrest in hope of a better future. His subsequent stay in Iraq’s second city lasted three years, during which time he watched first as militias took over, then as they were pushed back by a major government offensive in the spring of 2008. That operation, codenamed Charge of the Knights, was supposed to have res tored order and finally cemented Baghdad’s control, enabling British forces to leave behind a secure and peaceful city when they finally ended their Iraq mission in April. But in a series of interviews, Basra residents, security officials and politicians told The National there is growing concern that militants are still at large and that the city remains a potential tinderbox. Abu Tariq was suitably alarmed about developments after the January provincial elections that, in April, he returned to Damascus, a refugee once again. The 45-year-old fled from Basra this second time at short notice, bringing his son, his pregnant wife, a couple of suitcases and US$1,200 in cash…

U.S. has no plan to rescind invitations to Iranian diplomatic for National Day celebrations
Xinhua
The Obama administration said Monday that it has no plan to rescind invitations to Iranian diplomats to attend celebrations to mark America’s Independence Day on or around July 4. “There’s no thought to rescind the invitations to Iranian diplomats,” said State Department spokesman Ian Kelly, when asked whether the administration will cancel the invitations in order to protest Iranian government’s “violent and unjust actions” against its people. “We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran. And we tried many years of isolation, and we’re pursuing a different path now,” said the spokesman…

IRAN: Opposition leaders call for another demonstration Thursday
Alexandra Zavis
Iranian opposition leaders are calling their supporters into the streets to mourn those killed in clashes with security forces, defying a harsh warning from the country’s elite Revolutionary Guard to stop protesting the outcome of the disputed presidential election. A post on the Facebook page of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s main challenger, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, says there will be another “peaceful demonstration in Tehran” on Thursday and asks for updates on solidarity rallies around the world. Agence France-Presse reports that a similar announcement appears in Persian on the website of another presidential candidate, Mehdi Karroubi…
