No, the savagery against Gaza did not end
Marcy Newman, body on the line

Last night Palestinians in Gaza were shot at by Israeli terrorists in uniform: Palestinian medical sources reported that one Palestinian man was moderately wounded on Sunday at night by Israeli military fire targeting an open area east of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. Another Palestinian was injured in a separate attack in northern Gaza. (…) and the night before bombed again by American-made f-16s at the Rafah border.. .

Petition seeks expulsion of Palestinian activist from Israeli university
Press release, PACBI

The impressive growth of the Palestinian civil society campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel, particularly after its criminal war of aggression on the occupied Gaza Strip, is testimony to the morality and consistency of ordinary citizens and civil society organizations around the world concerned about restoring Palestinian rights and achieving justice for Palestinians. The most recent achievement of the Israel boycott movement was the adoption of BDS — nearly by consensus — by the Scottish Trade Union Congress, following the example set by the Congress of South African Trade Unions and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. In despair over their evident inability to stop or even hold back the growing tide of BDS across the globe, Israel apologists have resorted to an old tactic at which they seem to excel: witch hunts and smear campaigns…

Time to say ‘No” to Israeli fascism
By Khalid Amayreh in Occupied East Jerusalem

Israel and her supporters are making rabid efforts to enhance the ugly image of the new Israeli government. That government, as we all know, is composed of manifestly fascist parties based on Jewish supremacy and racist disregard for the Palestinian people which has been on the receiving end of Zionist savagery and brutality for over sixty one years. This month, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and his thuggish Foreign Minister Avigd or Lieberman are going to try to convince the leaders of western countries that Palestinians don’t really need freedom and liberty and human rights and that, like all animals, all they need is bread and some other food supplements…

Inside the Numbers
Obama’s War Budget

By JEFF LEYS

President Obama’s 2009 supplemental spending request to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is currently before Congress. The House Appropriations Committee will “mark up” (finalize its version) of a war funding bill at a committee hearing on May 7th. The full House will likely vote on the bill the following week. The objective is to have the bill finalized and to Obama for signature by Memorial Day. President Obama is seeking an additional $75.8 billion i n war funds for this fiscal year. It is possible that Congress will add to this amount before final passage. If Congress enacts Obama’s request, total war spending will come to $144.6 billion for Fiscal Year 2009 (which ends on September 30, with Fiscal Year 2010 beginning on October 1). This compares to the $186 billion war spending in 2008. Obama’s proposed war budget for 2010 is $130 billion…

Who benefits from Iraq’s treasure of business opportunities?
Fatih Abdulsalam, Azzaman

There is no country in the world with as many business and investment opportunities as Iraq. Iraq is perhaps the only country in the world with an endless list of offers for firms and individuals to start business and make money. Iraq itself has turned into an opportunity-for-all since the 2003 U.S. invasion. It has become a good opportunity for all those who lack the potential, the efficiency and the skills to do anything useful in lif e. So, one should not be surprised to see an illiterate and unemployed person to suddenly become a big businessman and contractor…

AI: Who will judge NATO’s crimes?
B92 News

An Amnesty International representative says this organization is “seeking mechanisms” so that NATO is tried for the crimes committed in Serbia and Afghanistan. Sian Jones told Belgrade daily Politika that AI “is looking go mechanisms for NATO to answer for their crimes, because no world organization currently has jurisdiction over the most powerful military alliance on the planet.” “We will continue to put pressure on NATO, because over the last ten years there has been clear pr oof that in 1999, during the bombing of Yugoslavia, there was a violation of human rights,” Jones said…

Gaza: Environment Emerges as a Major Casualty
Erin Cunningham*

Countless fruit groves across the Gaza Strip are now gone, entire farms bulldozed. The remains of thousands of destroyed homes emit toxic asbestos, while dilapidated infrastructure dumps raw sewage into the Mediterranean Sea. An already deepening environmental crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip has been further compounded by the recent war. Throughout the three-week Operation Cast Lead, Israel targeted almost every aspect of the coastal territory’s infrastruct ure. Homes, businesses, factories, power grids, sewage systems and water treatment plants were reduced to piles of rubble across the Gaza Strip…

West Bank bedouins to ‘stay put’
By Zeina Awad

The bedouins of Umm Al Khayr, a small town south-east of Hebron, may be among the most vulnerable Palestinian refugee communities in the West Bank, but they are fighting to keep the land they have lived on for generations. They have been battling the Israeli army in the courts to prove that the land they live on is theirs, and to block a so-called security patrol road from being built. On April 26, they faced off against the Israeli army to stop the road from reaching deep i nto their residential areas. With the help of international and Israeli anti-occupation activists, the bedouins were able to prevent the bulldozers from cutting through their homes. They scored a minor victory, but they know this could only be temporary and they recognise that their battle has just begun…

Resisting the Virus of Occupation
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues

Less than 300 died from Swine flu, world wide. In Iraq, in the month of April alone, over 355 were killed by the Virus of the Occupation. Wait a second here, let me get my mask out before addressing you…I am a hypochondriac, who is allergic to pigs. I love animals but was never driven by the urge to pet a pig. Something about pigs repulses me. Maybe they are cute and maybe they can fly too….I don’t care. Pigs are pigs. I have seen them in action. They are an ugly bunch. They groan all the time, and stink to high heavens. They live in rubbish, eat rubbish and are rubbish. We’ve got thousands of them in Iraq. White and pink ones and occasionally darker ones…domesticated, wild, hogs on the loose. So much for your swine…

The AIPAC Case in Washington, Iraq, and Beyond
David Bromwich

The New York Times story today on the dropping of the government case against the AIPAC lobbyists Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman comes in separate parts, not entirely signaled by paragraph breaks or outward format. The report by Neil A. Lewis and David Johnston sets out to answer three questions. What was this investigation about? Who is pleased and who displeased by the reversal? And why was the case dropped at just this moment? The last question is the easie st to answer. The Justice Department announced that the charges would be dropped two days before the opening of the 2009 AIPAC Convention….
