When the assault on Gaza entered its nineteenth day, with no end in sight. Israel continued its intense bombardment of the territory as Israeli troops edged closer to the heart of Gaza City. Nearly 1,000 Palestinians had been killed, more than 4,400 injured, many of them women and children. Thirteen Israelis had died over the same period, ten of them soldiers. DemocracyNow’s Amy Goodman spoke with Oxford professor Avi Shlaim. He served in the Israeli army in the mid-1960s and is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities on the Israeli-Arab conflict.
