It Will Take the World to Save These Homes
By Nora Barrows-Friedman
Orthodox Israeli settlers, backed by soldiers and police, attacked Palestinian residents of the Sa’diyya neighbourhood of occupied East Jerusalem Sunday evening, four days after the settler group invaded the home of the Jabir family and extra-judicially evicted them. The settlers claim ownership of the Jabir home and several others in Sa’diyya, even after an Israeli court had decided to examine an appeal filed by Palestinian families contesting the legiti macy of the settlers’ claims. Three Palestinians were injured and several were beaten and arrested by Israeli police when residents of the neighbourhood attempted to protect the Jabir home and restrain the settlers and Israeli forces…

Over 150,000 Gazans still without tap water
Over 150,000 Palestinians in Gaza (around 10 percent of the population) are struggling without tap water as a result of the damage caused to wells, pipes and waste water facilities during the recent 23-day Israeli offensive which ended on 18 January. “Our requests via the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to the Israeli military during the conflict to allow shipments of construction materials and spare parts to repair wells and facilities damaged during the war we re denied,” Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU) director-general Monther Shoblak told IRIN…

Israel ‘received arms shipment’
Duraid Al Baik
Dubai: More than 300 containers loaded with US-made arms and munitions were delivered to Israel last month, according to a human rights activist. Brian Wood, head of Arms Control Campaign at the London-based Amnesty International, told Gulf News that sources close to the rights group had reported about a German cargo ship, Wehr Elbe, which had docked and unloaded more than 300 containers at the Israeli port of Ashdod, 40 km to the north of Gaza last month, after which it bert hed at the Ukrainian port of Odessa in the Black Sea…

Children the Biggest Victims of the War on Gaza (Report)
Palestinian Information Center
…Dr. Fadl Abu Hein, Director of the Center for Societal Training and Crisis Management in Gaza, is of the opinion that all the psychological symptoms experienced by children in the Gaza Strip during the current period will be less than the many psychological effects of the war which will appear over the course of time. The effects on those suffering from them may last for many years. He indicates that this is linked to the magnitude of the events; seeing the places where they occurred will trigger suppressed memories of those harrowing scenes. He says: “No psychologist can give an accurate estimate of the magnitude and nature of the psychological impact of war on children, as all the details of life have become linked in the minds of our children to the bombardment, death and destruction, and this means that every aspect of the lives of Palestinian children is associated with mental illness.”..

IRAQ: Whither the Palestinian minority?
IRIN News
The remaining estimated 14,000 Palestinians in Iraq or holed up in camps on the Iraqi-Syrian border still face a precarious existence, despite a slowly improving security situation, say observers. During a recent visit to Iraq in a bid to improve their plight, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asked the Iraqi government to issue Palestinian refugees with internationally recognised passports rather than Iraqi travel documents, a Palestinian diplomat told IRIN on 5 April. Iraq has been issuing travel documents to Palestinians since 1948 “when they were exiled from Palestine”, said the Palestinian chargé d’affaires in Baghdad, Dalil al-Qasous…

Red Cross Report: Medical Officers ‘Participated in Torture’
RAWStory
A confidential report by the International Committee of the Red Cross has revealed that medical officers and health personnel supervised, and in some cases assisted as detainees were deprived of food, exposed to extreme temperatures, and subjected to waterboarding. A copy of the 2007 report was posted on a magazine web site Monday night. The report quotes one medical official telling a detainee: “I look after your body only because we need you for infor mation.”…

Aaronovitch’s Tantrum and the Demolition of Jewish Power
Gilad Atzmon, Palestine Think Tank
Last Wednesday, I participated in a panel that could have been a breakthrough debate on issues having to do with ‘Antisemitism’. The event was part of The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival and it took place at Oxford University. The discussion was moderated by the legendary BBC reporter Martin Bell. On the panel we had Nick Cohen and David Aaronovitch. They were there to elaborate on the case of ‘new antisemitism’. Interesting ly enough, Aaronovitch and Cohen were the prominent advocates of the illegal war in Iraq through the British press. They are also notoriously famous for their Islamophobic ranting, as if this is not enough, they were also caught supporting the latest Israeli deadly campaign in Gaza. I was there to argue that antisemitism is a spin, it is a myth, I was there to deliver a very simple message: there is no such a thing as antisemitism…

As Iraq rape trial begins, attorneys attack law
By BRETT BARROUQUERE, AP
The first former Army soldier to be charged as a civilian under a 2000 law that allows him to be prosecuted for alleged crimes committed overseas faces a trial of his peers — in a federal courtroom in Kentucky. Steven Dale Green, a former member of the 101st Airborne Division, was accused along with four fellow soldiers of raping a 14-year-old girl and killing her and her family in Mahmoudiya, Iraq, but he won’t face an Iraqi or military jury…

Is Obama even more Dangerous than Bush?
Doug Page
…An unthinking uncritical “Obamamania” among most of his supporters continues to prevail so far. This is dangerous for them, for President Obama and for all of us. Without critical analysis and pressure from his millions of supporters, Obama will stumble into disaster. We have carefully watched the new President’s first 100 days and we are appalled. We find that Obama has continued Bush policies affecting the abuses of Wall Street banks, and allowing Wall Street wrongdoe rs to manage our economy and the “recovery.” Forget the impeachment of Bush and Cheney, the prosecution of Eliot Spitzer for his sexual indiscretion, and Bernard Madoff’s little Ponzi-scheme. What about prosecuting those bankers who profited from the most massive fraudulent swindle in human history?..

“Hebrew Labor” Principle Lives On
Israel Railways Accused of Racism in Firing of Arab Workers
JONATHAN COOK
A decision by Israel’s state-owned railway company to sack 150 Arab workers because they have not served in the army has been denounced as “unlawful” and “racist” this week by Arab legal and workers’ rights groups. The new policy, which applies to guards at train crossing points, is being implemented even though the country’s Arab citizens — numbering 1.2 million and nearly one-fifth of the total populat ion — have been exempt from serving in the military since Israel’s establishment…
