Obama’s Speech: Great Oratory, Wrong Message
Ramzy Baroud

If great oratory is a prerequisite to peace, justice, and human rights, then President Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo, on June 4, shall be enough to cure every ill afflicting every Muslim nation. But since rhetoric never solved any real problem, one is left to question the wisdom behind Obama’s touted speech, clear or vague language, and all other indicators. It was clear that Obama’s speech was not aimed at delineating a clear US foreign policy towards Muslim nati ons. In fact, it was merely an image booster, not only to help the United States regain some of its tattered standing among Muslim nations, but also worldwide, for the US image is certainly tainted beyond the parameters of the “Muslim world”…

Afghan Resistance Statement
Obama`s speech is failed attempt to mislead Muslim world

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

… Contrary to expectations, there was no sign of practical change in the hostile policy of America towards Muslims. The Supreme Council of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan regards Obama`s speech to the Muslim world as part of the US` misleading slogans and gives the following explanations about it: 1. Barack Obama claims good-will and tolerance towards Muslims at a time when their occupation fo rces are committing mass murder and disturbing and imprisoning Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq. They violate their legal rights and mercilessly martyr them to defend their rights. They put them in the most hateful prisons of the world. Given these wild and illegal actions by Americans, Obama`s baseless speech has no importance. 2. As a groundless claimant, Barack Obama justified the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq by Americans in his meaningless speech. He said the ongoing efforts of their crusader forces against the Muslim nations of these countries were a legitimate struggle to secure US interests. According to national and international laws, the occupation of independent countries and hostile war against their free nations cannot be called a legitimate war. 3. Barack Obama wants to create divisions among Muslims and the Muslim world…

Divide and torture
Ewa Jasiewicz

…Today the torturing and the traumatisation continue. The media spotlight may have passed, but Gaza remains under siege with thousands physically unable to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives as aid is prevented from reaching the homeless and patients blocked from leaving the country for urgently needed treatment. Off the news agenda is Israel’s de-facto land grab and ongoing injuring and killing of civilians by snipers, gunfire and bombing from naval ships. Approximately 11 have been killed and 71 injured since the ‘ceasefire’ on 18 January. Fighters have also continued to launch operations. The 500-metre buffer zone around the Israeli border fence has in effect been extended to one kilometre. Approximately 100 homes were totally destroyed in the border areas of Beit Hanoun and 160 homes close to the border in Khoza’a. People still cannot reach their belongings without being shot at. Farmers and residents continue to be targeted and are leaving their land and homes. I accompanied Manwa Tarabeen, mother of six, to her bulldozed home in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, to collect belongings last month. After being shot at she declared, ‘I’m not coming back, I don’t want to be killed. We’re going to move to Jabaliya or inside Beit Hanoun.’…

DENIED INFAMY: THE ISRAELI ATTACK ON THE USS LIBERTY
By Alan Sabrosky

…The tale of the USS Liberty needs to reach the American people. It needs to reach them in a medium that will convey the calculated nature of the attack and the outrage it should evoke. And it should conclude with the statements of so many people in positions of authority at the time who said categorically that the attack was deliberate, and of survivors who lost shipmates there and likewise are convinced that the attack was deliberate and that their own government abandoned them at the time of the attack, and betrayed them afterwards…

How Much Really Separates Obama and Netanyahu?
By Jennifer Loewenstein

Benjamin Netanyahu and Barack Obama have one thing very much in common: both of them have nearly the same vision for the future of “Palestine”. They may not recognize it yet, but sooner or later, whether Netanyahu remains in power or is replaced by someone who speaks Dove-Liberalese better, they will shake hands and agree that the only thing that really separated them in the early months of President Obama’s administration was semantics: the language e ach man used to describe what he saw for the future of Palestine, or “the Israeli-Palestinian conflict” –a phrase that suggests there are two sides each with a grievance that equals or cancels out the other’s and that makes a just resolution so difficult to formulate. How deeply have we been indoctrinated…

The ICC: An instrument of imperialism
by Zafar Bangash

Imperialist countries have created a vast array of instruments to force the rest of the world to follow their diktats. To such high sounding bodies as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank that respectively manipulate others politically and financially, must now be added the International Criminal Court (ICC). Established in 2002, the ICC based in the Hague has an annual budget of $125 million. This number is considered grossly inadequ ate to deal with serious issues of war crimes committed by a long list of people strutting about the globe as world leaders and statesmen, but the West finds special utility in the new body….

The Constantly Widening Gap between Words and Deeds
Reuven Kaminer

…Asides from statements, there is no sign that Obama intends any action against Israeli responsibility for the outposts and the “natural growth” of the established settlements. At this point, we have to go back to square one. In its essence, the occupation is not a purely Israeli affair, but a joint US-Israeli project. Indeed, the management is local, but ownership belongs to the US as the financial backer and the provider of the political and military cover for the operation. The United States owns this occupation and is morally and politically responsible for the continued violent repression of the most basic Palestinian rights…

Allowing Guilty Pleas and Death Penalties Without Trial for Alleged 9/11 Plotters Would Be the Ultimate Obstruction of Justice
Washington’s Blog

…Remember, allowing guilty pleas would not follow standard criminal or even military procedure. Normally, prosecutors in military trials are normally required to prove guilt in a trial even against service members who want to plead guilty. And in normal American criminal trials, the judge has to make sure that the defendant understands that he is pleading guilty, that he has th e capacity to understand what that means, and that he wishes to accept the consequences. But some of the prisoners have been tortured until they are literally crazy, and may not understand what they are pleading guilty to or even what the death penalty means… Allowing these prisoners to now be executed without trial would be the ultimate obstruction of justice…

The Israeli occupation authority on Sunday issued a new batch of demolition orders against Palestinian homes in occupied Jerusalem, Palestinian sources in the holy city said. Tunnel fraud leaves Gazans on verge of financial ruin
Peter Beaumont in Gaza City

Jawad Tawfiq, a 52-year-old Gazan actor and director, was dubious at first, but his nephew insisted. If they could scrape together enough money, the nephew said, large profits could be made from investing in the tunnels that snake beneath the Egyptian border. “They were liars,” Tawfiq said bitterly last week. “They took my money to put in their own pockets. And we are being offered a fraction of what we gave them.” At first the tunnels emerg ed as smuggling routes; then they became the vital lifeline for a Gaza under economic siege by Israel. But many people who invested in the tunnels now see them quite differently – as a source of ruination…

KISSING the Criminal Zionists
Kawther Salam

…Tayseer Quba’a wondered: “If our (meaning the PA) difference with Hamas is ideological, then I can’t understand how we can go beyond the ideological difference with the Israeli Zionists and KISS them?”. He emphasized the urgent need to restore unity between the Palestinian National Authority and Hamas. He called upon the Palestinian National unity, saying “we need unity between all the Palestinians whether Fatah, Hamas, Jihad, Popular Front, Democratic Front … We need Unity far away from our political loyalties”. He also called upon the unity between the Palestinians in the Diaspora, saying that we have to learn how to reach and to win the European public opinion with all it’s sectors: politicians, artists, journalists, singers, students … and that we also need to build a new Palestinian generation in Europe…

ANALYSIS: LEBANON ELECTION 2009
The scramble for votes

By Todd Baer, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Beirut

This picturesque seaside and mountainous country of around four million inhabitants has long been referred to as the place where other countries come to fight their wars. And with election campaigning well under way before the June 7 poll, regional powers are, once again, flexing their muscles in Lebanon. However, so far at least, the guns have remained silent and there are no tanks rolling through the stre ets this time round. This is a war of words and dollars. Lebanon is once again caught in the middle with Saudi Arabia on one side and Iran and Syria on the other. Neighbouring countries are doing everything they can to influence the vote – widely seen as the most free and competitive election held in decades…

A Different Perspective…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues

Someone I know in Real life as opposed to Virtual life, has as of late, been complaining about me. Mind you he is not the only one who complains about me. A few others around me, complain about me… They say am not “available” and they add — “you are losing touch with reality – out there.” I don’t take words and complaints at their face value anymore. I am physically here, so I am available. And am not losing touch with reality out there, either. I am actually zooming in, on one corner of reality out there, a corner that most people care not to look at. Actually am zooming on a reality out there that most people are terribly silent about…
